Thoroughbred Trainer Peter Miller Takes The Lead: Peter Miller discusses his career, “Comma to the Top” successes and training philosophy with 710 ESPN Radio’s LaFern Cusack. Thoroughbred racehorse trainer Peter Miller knows a thing or two about being in the Winner’s Circle -- After all, Miller was the second leading trainer at the recent Hollywood Park Racetrack
meet (November 4 to December 19, 2010) with a 40% win ratio and 77% placing in the money, yielding earnings of a whopping $662,420. Miller’s overall 2010 earnings totaled close to $2 Million. (Photo Credit: http://www.petermillerracing.com/)The climax of the Hollywood Park meet was Miller’s sensational win of the acclaimed $750,000 Grade 1 CashCall Futurity Stakes with “Comma To The Top”, owned by entertainment moguls Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Kevin Tsujihara. With this recent victory, the 2-year old gelding is now a major contender for the 2011 Kentucky Derby held at Churchill Downs on May 7th.
Miller 43, was born in Santa Monica, raised in Beverly Hills and started working for renowned trainer Charlie Whittingham one day after graduating from Beverly Hills High School. “Whittingham really instilled a work ethic that I think I still have today”, explains Miller, “Putting the horse first and outworking the competition. I can’t control the luck and circumstances, but I can control the effort I put into training.”
Peter Miller Racing Stables was established over 20 years ago and is based at both Hollywood Park and Santa Anita Racetracks. The stables currently train over 30 horses for a variety of owners, and specialize in training two year olds. Daily training begins before dawn (4:30am), seven days a week, leaving little time for Miller to practice his other passion - his golf swing! For more information: PeterMillerRacing.com

The Los Angeles Jazz Society (LAJS) hailed for promoting and perpetuating the American art form jazz – continues its vital outreach efforts with its acclaimed music education program “Jazz In Schools,” a series of 90 in-class concerts, featuring a cadre of stellar jazz artists, reaching some 26,000 LAUSD students at 45 public elementary schools in just 18 days during February, Black History Month.
Now in its 23rd year, it is the most extensive in-school jazz program of its kind in Southern California. The purpose of the program is to introduce young students to jazz and, through the concerts and specially developed curriculum, help them understand the important contribution made to American culture by African Americans. The Los Angeles Jazz Society was founded in 1985 by a group of musicians and jazz lovers committed to elevating the image of jazz and its artists in the community.
The mission of the Los Angeles Jazz Society is to excite, educate and engage public school students with the vibrant rhythms and sounds of the only indigenous American music – jazz. We present multi-cultural and interactive in-school and off-campus jazz education programs. We also promote and honor the legacy of jazz and ensure its future by identifying and nurturing the emerging jazz musicians of tomorrow.
The Los Angeles Jazz Society is a California nonprofit, educational corporation organized under the laws of the State of California, and under section 501C (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. The primary focus of the organization is on jazz education for young people; to identify and nurture emerging jazz musicians and to help create future audiences by stimulating an appreciation for jazz through its education programs. The Brotherhood Crusade, Charisse Bremond Weaver, President and CEO: LaFern speaks with Charisse about the Brotherhood Crusade's principal mission is dedicated to building and sustaining an institution that raises funds and resources from within the community and distributes those funds directly back into the community.
Brotherhood Crusade has a history of building alliances with other organizations, corporations and foundations of goodwill that are committed to and understand the tremendous need for helping our community and people grow and prosper. The Brotherhood Crusade has made a major impact on the lives of many by creating and providing more than 50 million dollars in grants for programs and supportive services.
A Message From Charisse Bremond Weaver : "Forty-two years ago, a group of like-minded individuals formed the Brotherhood Crusade (originally known as the Black Congress) with little more than an ideology and $15,000.00 in seed money from my late father Walter Bremond, Founder. Today, their mandate to empower and uplift their community—both economically and socially— remains critically integral to those who are looked to be ostensibly beyond help.
As a consequence of your generous support, the seed they planted 42 years ago continues to be irrigated and infused with nutrients and has germinated into a tree of life for thousands of South Los Angeles and surrounding community residents. The pulse of Brotherhood Crusade remains on the needs of the community and the significance of your work through our community partnerships is evidenced by a plethora of highly-effective programs and services that are beneficial to those needs. We are proud to provide high-quality, life-changing youth development; technological education; financial literacy; educational enrichment; socio-behavioral life skills and social development; mentoring; vocational training; violence and gang prevention; mental health; and health education programs and services. These opportunities are well-coordinated, comprehensive in nature, and free to our constituencies. They represent the best promising practices for such services as measured and demonstrated through extensive evaluation and monitoring.
Moreover, our viability is substantiated by the partners that we have attracted. The individuals with whom we share and collaborate with and who have championed our causes and give of their time, resources and energy to assist those that we serve. Indeed, it is this network of support that has effectuated a median 175% improvement in academic performance among severely under-performing youth, identified and brought healthcare assistance to hundreds of individuals who were previously unaware of their illness, and caused thousands of families to significantly improve their quality of life. We are truly humbled by these alliances and proud of the countless achievements made possible as a result. Accordingly, we will continue to be diligent in further developing meaningful programs and services that align with our mission and meet the ever-changing needs of those whose lives we impact."
