01/23/11 on 710 ESPN Radio SoCal Experience with LaFern Cusack.
LaFern Cusack speaks with James Kenney about the business of music, songwriting and the making of his hit song "My Girlfriend." At the age of ten, James found his true love within music, SOUL. From that moment he could not get enough and was writing and performing his own music by the age of eleven. By thirteen, James was playing professionally anywhere he could around his hometown of Portland, Oregon.
Before long, James found himself in New York playing every joint, dive, and club ultimately winning over the crowd at The Apollo with his now storied version of "Let us Chill". After refining his talents in NY, James made his way to his new home in LA where he mustered every cent he could over nearly three years to create his first full album. He has since established an impressive club following from riveting performances at The Viper Room, The Mint and the House of Blues, just to name a few, and has worked with such music business luminaries as Dianne Warren, Rick Knowels, Steve Kipner and Andy Goldmark.
Fresh off the release of his new single "My Girlfriend" and the anticipation of his second album currently in production, the excitement around James is building. This volcano is about to erupt. For more information on James Kenney visit http://www.facebook.com/IamJamesKenney
Karen Kiss speaks with LaFern about Reading To Kids and how it's a grassroots organization dedicated to inspiring underserved children with a love of reading, thereby enriching their lives and opportunities for future success.
At the monthly reading clubs, pairs of volunteers read aloud to small groups of children, while their parents receive training on how to encourage their children to read at home. Kids, parents, teachers, and school libraries receive book donations at the end of the Reading Clubs. These are important donations, as 60 percent of low-income homes do not have age-appropriate reading materials for children.
Since its inception in 1999, Reading to Kids has given more than 92,875 prize books to children who attend the reading clubs, donated more than 57,512 hardcover books to school libraries, and our volunteers have spent over 106,908 hours reading to kids.
